Rex Johnson DVM and Shannon Johnson DVM

Rex Johnson, DVM

Dr. Rex Johnson is a 1997 graduate of Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He practiced in Texas and Colorado before moving back home to Oklahoma in July 2013. Dr. Johnson has a special interest in surgery, cardiology, dentistry, and exotic animal medicine. He is a proud active member of a variety of prestigious veterinary organizations, including American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), and Oklahoma Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA). He has pursued continuing education in a variety of areas, including advanced dental techniques, emergency and critical care, veterinary orthopedics, and small animal fracture management.

Opening Edmond East Animal Hospital is the fruition of a lifelong dream. He is thrilled to be able to meet interesting people each day while pursuing his personal goal of business ownership. Dr. Johnson loves having the opportunity to help animals and people on a regular basis. He enjoys finding out why each pet is important to their family. It is extremely rewarding for him to know that he is improving the lives of both animals and people, every day!

Dr. Johnson and his wife, Shannon (also a veterinarian), have two children, Teagan and Declan. Teagan is twelve years old, in 6th grade and loves cheer, tumbling and hanging out with her friends.  She wants to become a teacher and go to Oklahoma State University. Declan is ten years old and in 4th grade; he is extremely fast and loves scoring for his flag football team and playing tennis. They are also proud parents of Jagger, an orange tabby cat; Kitty Crumb O'Donnell, a black and white domestic short hair cat; Bronwyn Fynn McCool, a Lab/Terrier mix dog; and Scout, an American Paint horse. Outside of work Dr. Johnson enjoys spending time with his family, riding bikes, golfing, hiking, and watching football. He and Shannon also enjoy going to movies and concerts together when they get the opportunity.

Shannon Johnson DVM with her daughter

Shannon Johnson, DVM

Dr. Shannon Johnson met and married her husband, Dr. Rex Johnson, while they attended Oklahoma State University. Together they are co-owners of Edmond East Animal Hospital. She received her doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1998 from OSU. Dr. Shannon enjoys performing soft tissue surgery and helping senior pet owners with their loved ones. She loves when a surgical procedure actually makes a pet feel better than they did prior to surgery.

Dr. Shannon will primarily be working behind the scenes at Edmond East Animal Hospital, although on any given day, she could be found helping with surgeries or seeing appointments. Her priority at Edmond East Animal Hospital is that every patient and client be thoughtfully cared for and loved.  Any pets that feel more relaxed with a female veterinarian can also be set up for appointments with her or Dr. Vazquez.

When Dr. Shannon isn't at the hospital, you will likely find her volunteering at school or driving kids between cheer, flag football and other activities. The family's best times together are all gathering for dinner, weekend family movie nights or riding Scout at her Dad's farm. She enjoys movies, concerts, and snowboarding.

Rachel Vazquez, DVM

Dr. Rachel Vazquez attended Oklahoma Christian University where she received a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Spanish. She received her doctorate from Oklahoma State University in 2013. Dr. Vazquez became a veterinarian because of the importance and impact of the human-animal bond. She also loves the combination of science and medicine. One reason Dr. Vazquez chose this career is because animals have given her so much joy in life. She sees veterinary medicine reflect God as our Creator, which continues to increase her faith.

In her role with Edmond East Animal Hospital, Dr. Vazquez’s favorite aspect of her job is seeing her patients get better and making their owners happy in the process. She is especially skilled in ultrasound, dentistry, clinical pathology and cytology. Her priority is being a caring and compassionate advocate for both her patients and clients.

At home, Dr. Vazquez and her husband, Gregorio, have two children, Adler and Evanna. They all love their two mini-lop rabbits named Pebbles and Bam Bam.
